Mykonos Travel Tips and Instagram Spots

As I mentioned in my Santorini Travel Tips blog, visiting the Greek Islands has been a dream of mine for probably a decade or more. And I finally made it to Mykonos and Santorini in October 2019. Now, my dream is go back and visit again as well as experience some of the other islands I missed like Naxos, Ios, Corfu and Paros. Here is all my Mykonos travel tips from my experience:

I want to start by saying – because some of you may be thinking… OCTOBER? Is that a good time to visit Greece? And I must tell you yes!!! I am almost kicking myself for telling you the truth about this. I had friends who also visited June & September of the same year and complained about the crowds. I arrived in Mykonos Oct 2nd and our whole trip was summer weather and the crowds that many people complained about were not noticeable to me at all! I actually plan to visit again in Oct 2020.

When landing at the airport, you can take a bus but I didn’t really understand the whole deal with the bus, so I just took a cab. They only take cash and a bunch of places are like that. So, it is worth exchanging some money. I believe I only exchanged $150 and I was okay with that for the whole 5 day trip between places that would take card and ones that only accepted cash. We stayed in Little Venice which is the top spot but no cars can go through those streets so you will end up lugging your luggage to your destination. I was still in sweats from the plane and it was hot and I was grumpy. So change out of your sweats 🙂

Where We Stayed in Mykonos

We stayed right in Little Venice at an Airbnb which could not have been more convenient. Click here for the airbnb. It was in the center of it all, a block from the water, all the restaurants, the windmills are around the corner and Caprice of Mykonos is right next door (literally) if you’re looking for a party. The airbnb also has a private rooftop oasis to relax. And the owner, Doris, was literally the sweetest and most helpful host I have ever had at any airbnb property.

Mykonos is so beautiful that literally everything is picturesque (hence why I need to go back.) Your neck will hurt from turning your head at all the beauty of this island. So, let’s get into some of the “Instagrammable spots” but honestly everything is Instagrammable. First tip: start early! We got up before sunrise.

Kastro's Restaurant Mykonos

Kastro’s Restaurant

They open at 10:30am and put out the furniture just before. We had wanted to order food and do the photo with food on the table. But, even though it wasn’t busy we did notice a lot of people wanted a photo here so we were worried we would go shoot another photo and lose our spot.

Mykonos Windmills

From Little Venice you can pretty much walk to the water and see the windmills from anywhere. We shot the windmills at both sunrise & sunset. The lighting is just so beautiful at both times. You can witness the sunset over the water from the windmills. During sunrise, the sky can get a little pop of pink from the other side. The windmills are definitely a sunset viewing spot, so it’s going to have people there but again going in October definitely helped. There was also people shooting at sunrise but not really as many. The above photos are from sunrise. Below is sunset.

Mykonos Viewpoint

This is the best viewpoint of Mykonos in my opinion. Mind you – they are currently constructing buildings here, so I don’t know if this will be here much longer. Click here for the GPS coordinates. We just hiked up there!

Church of Panagia Paraportiani

I would have preferred to have no shadows on the church in this photo – but basically that is why you get up early. No crowds and better lighting for photos. I probably took this at 9am.

#Happiness corner

This is of course another spot you want to get to early. Once people wake up and the cruise ships dock this corner will be flooded. Even at 6am this spot was not easy to shoot. Click here for exact coordinates.

Agia Kyriaki Square

This was very difficult for us to find because we kept searching for the Pandora store – because in pictures we had seen taken here had the Pandora store logo. However, it is now called House of Jewels. I had a hard time figuring out what pose I wanted to do and never posted this one because I am not a huge fan of it. But many photos taken here are super cute. Click here for the location.

180º Sunset Bar

For a sunset location, 180º Sunset is your go to. I must tell you that we wanted to get photos from Cavo Tagoo Mykonos pool during sunset because those are epic. However, although it is open to the public at 6pm you cannot go in the pool unless you are a guest or have a day pass. We were told we could come back at 6pm and we were not told we couldn’t go in the pool until we got back which was a huge waste of time. We ended up rushing to 180º Sunset Bar and it was night time. So, don’t make the same mistake.
